Google Digitizes Books

In this space I continue to make the case that we need to get down with computers and technology. There are no more excuses. The Internet, SmartPhones, and Computers are no longer a luxury. This technology is now a requirement to participate in the world. Many still beleive that this is an economic issue. It is not. African Americans have plenty of disposable income. And for those of us who are unable to afford access to technology there are many free avenues that provide the kind of access I am advocating. If we need to discuss these resources please comment here and I will be happy to provide.

There are so many areas in your life that you can simplify and save money simply by owning a computer and having a high-speed connection to the Internet. Here is another example. Google has a project that entails digitizing books. What this is means is that you will be able to access books online electronically. I think this is an excellent project. In education we are always hearing about the poor quality of the textbooks in the urban public schools. Technology once again can play the role of the great equalizer. If you are prepared to take advantage of it.

It May as Well Be Water!

Precisely. This is exactly how I see having access to high-speed Internet as a basic lifestyle necessity such as water or fuel. Has it come to this? Yes it has. Just the other day I was visiting with a family member who was having trouble with their computer. After taking a look at her system I realized, she does not have a computer problem, She as a speed problem. She was using a dial-up connection. This is simply no longer acceptable. If you wish to remain using a dial up connection for whatever reason you dream up you are making a mistake. You will be losing a big part of your ability to be part of society. Some may disagree. I think it is that important. If it is a price issue sacrifice some other LUXURY and install DSL. I a recent article in The Austin American Statesman it was noted that this is becoming an important part of real estate decisions whether or not the area has broadband access? My favorite line in the article was: Broadband access is becoming such a determinant in home buying decisions that it may as well be water.

It may as well be water indeed. Let’s get with it yall. The time has come to include high speed access the Internet as a must have and no longer a luxury

Brown University iPhones

In a recent post on this blog, I wrote an article titled 3 Ways I Use My iPhone for Mobile Learning. Mobile learning is becoming a very hot issue on university campuses. Universities are beginning to recognize the power of these portable devices. A recent article in The Chronicle of Higher Education discusses how Brown University has setup their network to use allow students to take advantage of the iPhone and Treo PDA’s. These technologies are quickly becoming part of the toolset at the top universities and the better school districts in the country. Let us not be left behind. Embrace the technologies that you need to embrace in order to learn at the same pace, and take advantage of all that the curriculum at your learning institution has to offer.
