In several conversations that I’ve had over the past few weeks with friends and family members I have noticed a recurring theme. Many people in the black community feel that they are incapable of mastering technology. As an expert in technology and a technology instructor of course I feel that nothing could be farther from the truth.
These conversations revealed something that I had not before considered. Perhaps, we in the black community have a confidence problem when it comes to computer technology. I wish to emphasize computer technology, as it seems we do not have these same reservations when it comes to other advancements in society.
After all, and I may have mentioned this before, we do not let this lack of confidence keep us from driving automobiles, using the telephones, and buying high definition plasma televisions. Well if confidence is the issue and I am becoming more and more convinced that it is then that is another matter entirely.
Self esteem and self-confidence is not a new ill in the black community and that is good news as there are many experts, scholars and practitioners who have provided us with many different solutions to the problems of self-confidence. Below are a few of the authors that I have personally read in order to gain a knowledge of self that will lead to confidence:
· Naim Akbar
· Jawanza Kunjufu
· Iyanla Vanzant
· Dennis Kimbro
· Molefi Asante

MCT's After School

There is a shortage of 350,000 computer programmers. Most of these jobs are now going to foreigners. Are there any young African American males who are interested in careers in computer programming? I am certified to teach Microsoft programming technologies. I am perfectly willing to set aside time to volunteer these services to high schools. Are there any schools out there that believe something like this could be beneficial? I do. I can also help others to become certified by Microsoft so that we can establish Microsoft Certified Trainers on campus and place young African Americans in these exciting careers
